A regular eating schedule and balanced meals provide the body with the nutrients it needs to function at an optimal level. People are most alert and able to recall information when properly nourished.

Exercise and Rest Properly

Exercise and sleep may seem like opposite goals, but the brain needs proper amounts of both. Getting regular exercise can give a surge of energy. Eight hours of sleep ensures that a student is well-rested and able to focus on the task at hand, whether studying or taking a test.

Use Relaxation Techniques

Students who struggle with anxiety should practice deliberate relaxation techniques. This may include a practice such as yoga or visualization. Remember that the goal is not to eliminate anxiety, but simply to decrease the anxiety level.

Study Smart

Prepare the Environment

Students can a study schedule to ensure that there study time is free of distractions or other concerns. They can also choose a location free from socializing or television. Taking advantage of peak energy levels encourages confidence and capability.

Avoid Cramming

Preparation is the best weapon against test anxiety. Do not wait until the last minute to study. Study at multiple times of the day. Research shows that reviewing material 4-6 hours after first studying it dramatically increases recall.

Utilize Proven Strategies

Flashcards are a simple way to review information. There are plenty of proven strategies to help students retain information. SQ3R is a proven, systematic way to learn textbook information. It is worth taking the time to research the method and implement it. SQ3R involves Surveying material, creating Questions, and then Reading text, Reciting questions, and Reviewing answers.

Come Prepared

Students should always arrive early for the exam. This avoids adding any last minute stress. It is imperative to take the time to make sure all necessary supplies are present, pencils sharpened, jacket removed, or anything that will help increase a student's comfort level.

Focus on You

Socializing with anxious peers will only exacerbate a student's anxiety. It is much better to focus on the self. Positive self talk and visualization increases confidence.

Work Smart

Test taking is a learned skill. It is important to consciously remember not to get stuck on any specific question. Small relaxation breaks refocus the test taker on the overall goal. Finally, just as in elementary spelling tests, it is still important to go back and check answers.

Recognizing test anxiety is the first step toward achieving optimal test performance. Deliberately practicing anxiety-reducing strategies will help ensure that the score matches the student's knowledge level.
